Trying to be Kind

March 16, 2011

I’ve been inspired and thought I would share! A couple of days ago I watched an interview with Alicia Silverstone. I have to admit I really didn’t know much about her…probably my age! She is a actress, activist and extremely committed conservationist who after years of suffering acne, low energy and a multitude of other issues she decided to go VEGAN. Just the thought gives me the willy’s! I did try eliminating meat a few years back and just couldn’t find a balance. In truth, I probably didn’t try very hard. For Alicia the choice was easy once she began to see such amazing results from her plant-based diet. So I have ordered her new just came out in paperback. What really attracted me to this particular book were the 3 separate levels, from flirting to superhero. The flirts ( that would be me) learn to “dip a toe” into the vegan pool. While the superhero program is based on the principles of macrobiotics. I found out when ordering the book that she also has a blog you can check out too. I hope to be successful with this new venture! I’d love to hear from anyone who is already embracing this lifestyle!

Here is a list of items I found that will make it easy to start whipping up some of these recipes.

Alicia’s Pantry Must-Haves for going Vegan (most items can be purchased at Whole Foods Market)

  1. Earth Balance Butter
  2. Veganaise
  3. Ume Vinegar
  4. . Brown Rice Syrup
  5. Uncle Eddie’s Vegan Cookies (PB Choco Chip or Molasses) and/or Newman”s Own vegan
  6. Bacon: Light Life (smokey tempeh strips or smart bacon)
  7. Nori Sheets
  8. Sausage: Field Roast Smoked Apple Turkey

How do these sound….YUM!

Chorizo Tacos
Serves 2 to 3

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 ounces sliced vegan chorizo or taco crumbles
  • 4-6 corn tortillas, soft or hard as you prefer
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • Prepared salsa
  • 1 cup tofu sour cream or Tofu Cream
  • 2/3 cup shredded vegan Cheddar Cheese
  • Hot sauce (optional)

Heat the olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chorizo or taco crumbles and cook, stirring until heated through, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl. If using soft tortillas, wrap in a slightly damp kitchen towel and heat in a 350°F oven or toaster oven for 5 to 6 minutes or until warm and pliable. (Hard taco shells don’t need to be heated.) Arrange the onions, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, tofu sour cream or Tofu Cream, and cheese in small bowls alongside the chorizo. Pass around the tortillas so everyone can fill their own tacos and add hot sauce to taste.

Desert too!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups
Makes 12

  • 1/2 cup Earth Balance butter
  • 3/4 cup crunchy peanut butter (preferably unsweetened and unsalted)
  • 3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs or 10 graham cracker squares
  • 1/4 cup maple sugar or other granulated sweetener
  • 1 cup grain-sweetened, nondairy chocolate or carob chips
  • 1/4 cup soy, rice, or nut milk
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans, almonds, or peanuts
  • Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners. (“If You Care” makes unbleached liners made from recycled paper.) Set aside.

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the peanut butter, graham cracker crumbs, and maple sugar and mix well. Remove the mixture from the heat. Evenly divide the mixture, approximately 2 tablespoons per cup, among the muffin cups. Combine the chocolate and milk in another pan. Stir over medium heat until the chocolate has melted. Spoon the chocolate evenly over the peanut butter mixture. Top with chopped nuts. Place in the refrigerator to set for at least 2 hours before serving.

Hope you enjoy these!

An artful inspiration and an new collection

March 10, 2011

I wanted to share my latest little mini collection I put together and it’s all because of my new friend Artie of the very popular blog Color outside the lines. He is an artist and designer for those of you who are not yet familiar.

I had an immediate connection to him as a fellow artist myself!

Now for those of you who know my photography skills…ugh! I tried.CIMG1303 Here are mine inside my master bedroom built-in. They look fantastic at night all lit up!

Please hope over to his blog to these beauties for your self!

His styling is FANTASTIC!

He was having a big sale so he only has a few left right now..but don’t despair more are coming soon!

It sure feels good to be back!

1 bed canopy and a chandelier too!

March 7, 2011

This picture has been on many blogs and I have always loved it!

So I decided to use our four poster bed as my prototype for something similar. The bedroom ceiling is less than ideal for a chandelier so having one hanging above the bed has not been an option. Until now!!

I chose a simple ivory colored heavy weight linen from Henry Calvin and a French linen trim from renaissance ribbons.

and for the chandelier I decided to go with this beauty from Eloquence.

Can’t wait to see this installed!!

Enjoy your week~

On the road back..

March 6, 2011

To say I took a long break would be quite an understatement! My last post was a sad one and I guess it just took me longer to get back into the swing of things. I read blogs every day and LOVE to see what you all are up to. Our life is happy and today I would like you to meet our 2 new additions:

Coco & Ruby

Our new girls joined our family back in August. First, Ruby and just 2 weeks later we welcomed Coco.

A little bit about our journey…. As many of you know Nico was quite well known within the rescue community. Having been left for dead inside a puppy mill and only 46lbs his story was carefully watched. We loved and nurtured him but because he was already so old we had him only 4 years. So when he passed away the end of June we were planning to wait awhile before starting the process of adopting another berner…..Well…you know how that goes! We were contacted about 1 month later by our dear friend Bruce (Nico’s rescuer) about a possible female he had. About a week later a local rescue group also let us know they too had a female in need of a home. We weren’t sure about having 2!! I need not tell you more on that.

Coco is about 2 and quite large with an amazing amount of VERY curly hair! This isn’t very common in the breed. She became VERY sick before we were to adopt her and at one point it was looking like she would not make it. We were devastated as you can imagine. After many days in the hospital she pulled through and headed out by way of a wonderful long haul truck driver! They left Michigan on a Tuesday and just about 4 days later I picked her up at a truck stop in Salinas. It took about 38 hours with 2 men driving non-stop. To say she was a trooper during those 4 days would be a HUGE understatement! After she arrived home I wondered if that experience would ruin my chances of her ever really enjoying the car. Boy was I wrong! It was just the opposite. She’s our snuggle bunny! Her very favorite job is running into Patrick’s room in the morning giving him wake up kisses.

Ruby was located in So. California so we decided to make a mini vacation out of picking her up. I arranged for the 3 of us to stay at a local pet friendly hotel and what could have turned into an utter disaster was the most amazing vacation we have probably had! We spent our days sleeping together on the bed, taking long walks & lounging at the beach. By the time we all headed for home, I felt like she knew and trusted she was finally home.  We were told she was found somewhere near a boat launch area and in pretty bad shape. Besides being very underweight with a thinning coat, she was small and quite timid. Although she LOVES and craves attention she is cautious around men and it is very obvious that she was abused. We also learned quite quickly that our backyard was NEVER a place she wanted to ever be. Getting her to go out just to do her business was quite difficult in the beginning. We figure her life was probably “the yard” and not much else. Always breaks my heart to see the effect this cruel behavior has on our beloved pets. So this is the story of our girls.

It feels good to be back!

I hope you will check in again soon!

Thank you!

July 11, 2010

soraya bouquet I wanted to thank everyone who has posted on my blog and for all of the private messages I have received. Most of you do not know me personally and I am so touched that you took the time to reach out to our family. The kindness of people during a very sad time is comforting and very appreciated!

I know our life with berners will begin again when the time and the pup are just right. For now I am remembering the last 4 years with a happy heart knowing that Nico made an extraordinary difference in our lives.

a goodbye…

July 6, 2010

porch2 This was a post I hoped to never have to write. Of course I knew the day would eventually come. Last Tuesday June 29th my sweet Nico crossed over the bridge. He passed away while cradled in my arms. the end came fast, a blessing for both of us.

I have spoken about Nico a few times in my posts but never mentioned the awful diagnosis we received last June. After many tests it was revealed that he had degenerative myelopathy. In short, it is a slow, progressive spinal cord disorder of unknown cause. He became completely paralyzed in February so we knew we were on borrowed time. His spirits were high and he dealt with his harness and our help like a real champ! I can say without hesitation that we lived every day of the 4 years he was with us to the absolute fullest.

I say that we rescued him but in truth it was he who rescued me. He was our family dog but he was my boy. The stories I could tell are endless and this isn’t the forum for that I know. I will say that he and I took an amazing journey resulting in each of us becoming happy, confident, and content beings. Only 4 short years together but the love, companionship and devotion will be in my heart forever. He made me a better person and taught me that sometimes when all seems dark and hopeless someone or something wonderful is right around the corner. I will be eternally grateful that I had the honor of calling him ours.

For all you that share your lives with animals…..Give them an extra hug today. They deserve it!

Happy trails to you my sweet Nico~ DSCN1813

All because of you..

May 31, 2010

Baking doesn’t really happen in my house. You see, I have a gas only range and it is much to harsh for delicate baking. So…when a friend decided to sell her dual fuel Viking range..We decided to jump back into remodeling. It has been some time since my husband has embarked on any real construction jobs around the house. Not having 220 in the kitchen is a bit of a challenge! Thus, the removal of ceiling sheetrock.

With gentle arm twisting and a promise of many delicious desserts baked in the “new” oven I am getting some actual surface mount lighting to replace the cheap and really ugly cans I had. I  prefer seeing surface mount fixtures in the ceiling rather than a bunch of down lights. Unlike typical canned lighting, this style of fixture illuminates the ceiling rather than the floor.

He is a real trooper! Spending the long weekend doing this:CIMG1167 CIMG1169

Here is what I am thinking for the new lighting:t_SL5151HAB-WG.jpg m_CHC4134A.jpg

A proper Thank You to Romantic Country magazine

March 26, 2010

RC_Cover A wonderful end to a beautiful week! I mentioned some time ago that the editor of Romantic Country contacted me about this time last year with a proposal to shoot my home for an upcoming issue! I was flattered, honored, crazy nervous and oh so excited. The day was last June and it was a long one. The talented and extremely funny Mark Lohman and the equally talented cute as a button stylist Sunday Hendrickson arrived at 9:00am sharp. We wrapped at around 7:00pm we were exhausted, but so pleased how everything turned out.

I scanned the article for you to check out in case you don’t see these magazines in your area.

RC_p57 RC_p58 RC_p59 RC_p60 RC_p61 RC_p62 A very huge thank you to Fifi O’Neill the editor of Romantic Country for including my talents in your beautiful magazine and last but certainly not least thank you to  Kim McCole for putting my words on the pages in such a perfect way. It is me and that feels really good!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
